FITS FAQ

How soon will my data appear on the FTP server?
  • The realtime FITS maker runs nearly every hour, except when the prodcution FITS maker is running, so data is continuously being added to the FTP area. Production data is added either in the morning or in the evening, local Eastern time.
How long will my data be on the FTP server?
  • 20 days.
My data files have been deleted already. Is there any other way to retrieve them?
  • This FTP service is the last step in the life of data in the SOF. After it is deleted from the FTP server, it's really out of our hands. The next source for it will be the GOF/XSDC, when they send you your official data tape.
Can I retrieve public-owned TOO's?
  • Yes, any proposal whose third digit is 4, 7, or 8 (eg, 40401, 40805) is public-owned. You can download the data and un-encrypt it using the access key 'publictoo'.
Some of my data is missing!
  • Realtime data is not expected to be complete for every observation, so there may be data missing from your realtime FITS files. A previous bug which caused some realtime data to be missing has been fixed, so the realtime data you get now is as good as it will ever get. Production data may also have gaps, but these are less common. IF you do have a gap in your production data, then that data really is missing.
